2008 Year of the Frog
Supported by Water Corporation at Perth Zoo
2008 Year of the Frog supported by Water Corporation at Perth Zoo is a global campaign to generate public awareness and understanding of the amphibian extinction crisis which represents the greatest species conservation challenge in the history of humanity.
After thriving for more than 360 million years, one-third to one-half of the world's approximately 6,000 known amphibian species is now in danger of becoming extinct in our lifetime.
In response to this global problem, scientists and conservationists have agreed to an Amphibian Conservation Action Plan including research, assessment and conservation of amphibians in the wild.
For species that cannot be saved in situ (in the wild), the plan is to rescue them before they are gone and to protect them in zoo-based breeding programs until the threats to wild populations can be controlled.
As part of this global response, Amphibian Ark - supported by a worldwide network of zoos and aquariums - has been established to rescue priority endangered amphibian species and place them in 'protective custody' in dedicated biosecure facilities at zoos, aquariums and other institutions around the world for safekeeping and breeding, helping to ensure the long-term survival of amphibians. These rescued amphibians will be released back into the wild when the major threats have been controlled.
Zoos and aquariums and other related organisations are in the perfect position to not only provide a safe haven for many amphibians but to also reach out to their visitors and let them know what's happening to amphibians and what they can do to help.
Many zoos in Australia, including Perth Zoo, are taking part in the 2008 Year of the Frog supported by Water Corporation at Perth Zoo. Throughout the year, Perth Zoo visitors will have opportunities to get behind the fight for amphibian survival with special events. Visitors can also help by making a donation to Perth Zoo's Wildlife Conservation Action.
