This provides them with hands-on zoo and wildlife experience that is difficult to gain elsewhere.

There are also opportunities for university students and postgraduates to undertake research with the veterinary department. Students from Murdoch University, University of Western Australia and interstate universities have completed projects in collaboration with Perth Zoo.

Perth Zoo also has a Veterinary Residency program where a qualified veterinarian receives training and education in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. This is a three-year program run in conjunction with Murdoch University. The Resident Veterinarian spends the majority of their time working at Perth Zoo. They also undertake a research project in the field of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine.

The veterinary department also provides training for other Zoo staff in areas such as preventing the transmission of zoonotic diseases.
