Recent Births and New Pairings

A female infant was born to Hecla and Jury on 12 July at Perth Zoo. This is the seventh gibbon born at the Zoo since 1995. Her name is Sunda.

Also in July 2010, the first ever infant was born at the Javan Gibbon Centre in Indonesia. Female infant Yani was born to first time parents,  Jowo and Bombom who continue to show excellent parental behaviours.

A male infant, Dwi, was born to Iwok and Reggat on 21 March 2010 at Howlett’s Zoo.

One of the first zoos to sign up to the GCMP, Mogo Zoo in NSW, Australia, only recently received a pair of Javan Gibbon. The female came from Port Lympne in the UK and paired with one of Perth Zoo’s male offspring in Perth prior to them both moving to Mogo in October 2008. The pair settled incredibly quickly and gave birth to a female infant named Cinta in September 2009.

In March 2011, a male infant was born to Fort Wayne’s new pair Lionel and Dieng. This was an outstanding achievement for a new pair to breed successfully in such a short period of time.

New GCMP Members

The GCMP welcomes Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo to the program. With extensive experience managing other gibbon species, Fort Wayne was recently allocated a pair of Javan Gibbon from the Centre for Gibbon Conservation in California. Gibbons Lionel and Dieng seem to have settled well into their new enclosure and it is hoped that they will successfully breed.
