I have a possum in my roof. How should I get it out?

Possums in the roof is a very common problem - they are looking for somewhere sheltered and dry to live. We suggest the following -

  • Seal off all exit and entry points into the house, especially under the eaves.
  • Build or buy simple nest boxes to place in the trees near the house.
  • Release the possum/s into the trees with the nest boxes. This is best done at dusk.
  • As a last resort, borrow a possum trap from the local council or the Department of Environment and Conservation.

Hopefully the nest boxes in the trees will be more attractive than trying to find a way back into your house. The Department of Primary Industries in Victoria has information on how to make a possum box.

DEC has produced a brochure on living with possums.
