2. Are your graduate work experience opportunities promoted in universities/TAFE sectors, or are students responsible for identifying opportunities through written requests or tapping into established networks?
Generally, students are responsible for identifying their own opportunities through written requests. No formal marketing is undertaken. However, information on our work experience program is discussed elsewhere on this website.
The Program has been running for a considerable length of time and through word of mouth and collaborative relationships (such as apprenticeships, joint Research projects or teaching programs) with most WA Universities and TAFEs, lecturers and heads of schools promote our program as deemed appropriate.
We also offer Apprenticeships and NICP Cadetships which are advertised through the Govt. Job boards, New Apprenticeship Recruitment Centre Networks, Tafes and University Career Centres, and with the cadetships through the National Indigenous Cadetship Program website.
Vacation work is also occasionally available for students however this is more in the area of Customer services or Zoo Keeping and these opportunities are promoted as Casual Pool recruitment exercises and advertised on the Govt. Job Board on Tafe and University Career Centre Websites and the Zoo’s own web site.
3. Are placements paid or unpaid?
All work experience placements are unpaid.
Apprenticeships, Cadetships and vacation work are paid placements.
4. What criteria for placements are applied? Are the programs available to Undergraduates, Postgraduates or TAFE students? Are particular study streams/disciplines preferred?
Students who apply for an apprenticeship; cadetship or vacation work are required to make a formal application through a recruitment exercise, with information packs available through out Website or by contacting the HR department. These positions will have job descriptions with selection criteria identified. Ideally they will being studying or have studied in a relevant area; have some practical exposure already; and will demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills and a good 'value fit' with the values held by Perth Zoo.
