Elephants of Asia
Come see gentle giants at play in this recently upgraded exhibit. The home of Perth Zoo’s Asian Elephants has expanded greatly to provide more room for these amazing animals.
In 2005, Stage One of the 'Elephants of Asia' exhibit upgrade was completed. A new, larger exhibit was created for the female elephants complete with a large pool and sensor-activated drinking fountains. This new expansion freed up the previous elephant exhibit for the exclusive use of the Zoo's male elephant, Putra Mas.
Two new viewing bays were also built, with one overlooking the new pool.
Stage Two of the project was completed in 2009 and included a new barn for the male elephant and a further extension of the display area for the Zoo's two female elephants. A new amphitheatre for visitor viewing was also built.
Part of the project included the creation of Bukit Station, a themed interpretive centre that educates visitors about the importance of rainforests and the threats facing them and the animal and plant life they contain. The centre includes signage and films about rainforest animals, as well as a life-sized, life-like model of an Asian Elephant baby.
Now complete, the $5.2 million redevelopment has trebled the size of the elephant exhibit, providing more space and new facilities for the herd. Read more about the opening of this exhibit in 2009.
Daily special presentations at the exhibit give visitors the chance to learn all about these amazing animals and ask questions of the elephant keepers. A special bull training session is also held at various times throughout the week.
