2009 Calendar
Here's what's new in Education for 2009:
Sustainable Schools at Perth Zoo
The Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative WA (AuSSI-WA) provides support for schools endeavouring to embed sustainability within the culture of their school community. Perth Zoo has developed a suite of education experiences to support AuSSI-WA objectives highlighting human impacts on biodiversity. There is a program for each phase of development (Late Adolescence program available from July 2000).

Lesson in a Lunchbox
Phase of Learning: Early Childhood
Enough rubbish, we need the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle. This activity-based session introduces students to the idea that the things we consume have an ecological price tag. Students examine the contents of the average Aussie lunchbox and link their choices to sustainability.

Backyard Safari
Phase of Learning: Middle Childhood
One of the key threatening processes leading to loss of biodiversity is the reduction in natural habitat. Students learn how to create fauna friendly habitats for our local wildlife at school or in their own backyard by going on a ‘safari’ through frog, bird and lizard friendly gardens.

Bushland Real Estate
Phase of Learning: Early Adolescence
Cockatoo numbers have been steadily falling since European settlement. Factors threatening these species are examined. The session is designed to motivate students to build nests and boxes that will help sustain native wildlife.
Being Conservative
Biological Science: Units 2BBIO, 3ABIO
Phase of Learning: Late Adolescence
South-western WA is a biodiversity hotspot and human activity has put increasing pressure on species in the region. This session examines the work of Perth Zoo’s Native Species Breeding Program and introduces students to some of the hands on science and decision making processes that underpin our conservation efforts.
Other Education Experiences
Zoo Science
Integrated Science: Units 1AISC, BISC, CISC, DISC
Phase of Learning: Late Adolescence
Learn how our understanding of ecology and biology is applied to caring for animals in Perth Zoo’s animal collection and conservation efforts.
Monkey See, Monkey Do
Psychology: Units 1APSY, 2BPSY
Phase of Learning: Late Adolescence
Students discover how the principles of learning (including examples of operant conditioning and positive reinforcement) have been applied to the care and management of Zoo animals. The social structure and communication within a group of non-human primates is explored through the collection and evaluation of data.

A to Zoo is a new, fun and factual interactive program specially designed for children up to five-years-old at Perth Zoo. Read more about this program here.
