Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I don't know a lot about native species. Can I still do a Tiwest Night Stalk survey?

A. Yes, everyone is encouraged to participate. Just follow the instructions and have a go.

Q. I did a Tiwest Night Stalk survey and didn't see any animals. Was this a waste of time?

A. No. Think about why you didn't see anything. Could it be because:

  • you were unlucky, or noisy, or
  • there werent any there.

If there were no animals there, then your results are useful because they indicate the loss of biodiversity at your survey site. This is important information to know.

Q. I only saw feral animals. Does this mean my survey is a failure?

A. No. This is useful information because it indicates the loss of biodiversity at your survey site. Try and think about what the feral animals are eating. Knowing where feral animals are helps wildlife agencies know where feral animal control is needed.

Q. Do I record animals other than marsupials and feral animals?

A. Yes, all animals encountered should be recorded.

Q. If I hear an animal, but I do not see it, should I record it on my Spotters' Log?

A. No. Only record animals that you actually see.

Q. If I come across a dead animal should I record it on my Spotters' Log?

A. Yes, indicate that it is dead and the cause of death if possible.

Q. If I come across animal scats, tracks or diggings, should I record these on my survey sheet?

A. Please do not include these on your Spotters' Log.
