Research Opportunities

Are you interested in research opportunities?

Perth Zoo regularly has Honours, Masters and PhD students working on projects within Perth Zoo. A Research staff member from the animal division, including curator or vet, will co-supervise the projects and assist the students with their work.

Students interested in doing a project at the Zoo should first be accepted (or likely to be accepted) as an Honours, Masters or PhD student with one of Perth's five Universities. You should first contact the Director of Animal Health Services and Research to discuss the research projects available at Perth Zoo.

Students wishing to do an Honours project at Perth Zoo will need to demonstrate they have a 70% (or above) average assessment from their core units over their three previous undergraduate years.

You then need to fill out Research and Ethics Application which must be approved prior to your starting work. Developing your Research Proposal can take some time, so you need to do this well in advance of when you wish to begin work.

MonocyteFor example, for an Honours project due to commence in February, it is recommended that you approach Perth Zoo in October or November the previous year to be sure to have all the arrangements and formalities settled on time.

Generally speaking, Perth Zoo does not fund research projects originating from external organisations, however the animals being studied are fully cared for, fed and managed and keeping staff will usually be available to assist with procedures if required.

Please use the form below to send an enquiry to the Director of Animal Health and Research about undertaking research at Perth Zoo.
