Amphibian Ark (AArk)

AArk represents zoos' amphibian action globally, and as such, acknowledges the diverse and varying capacities of institutions and also the regional and jurisdictional differences.

The emphasis of AArk is to undertake the facilitation of ex-situ action and calls on zoos and aquariums to become involved wherever possible. In Australasia, this action will be coordinated through the recently developed ARAZPA Amphibian Action Plan.

Much of AArk’s work will be to ‘link’ zoos, institutions and other authorities to actions around the world that may be required. This is particularly the case with linking those zoos and aquariums in the northern hemisphere with actions that are required in developing countries. A particular priority area was USA institutions’ capacity to assist South and Central American zoos to develop ex-situ programs for species under threat. This has already occurred with Panama and work is also under way in Madagascar.

There will also be a strong emphasis on amphibian husbandry training in AArk. AArk will also provide links to other global bodies active in amphibians, such as the IUCN/SSC Amphibian Specialist Group. Global public awareness is another mandate for AArk.
