Sun Conure

Other Names: Sun Parakeet
Conservation Status: Endangered
Length: 30 cm
Weight: 120–130 g
Incubation: 24–25 days
Number of eggs: 3–4

Distribution: Guyana and Brazil
Habitat: Dry forests

Description: As chicks, Sun Conures are olive green but change to a rainbow of yellow, red, orange, blue and green as they mature.

Diet: Sun Conures are herbivores and feed on fruits, berries, nuts and flowers.

In the wild: Little is known about how wild Sun Conures behave as there are less than 2,500 remaining in the wild. They are very social and flocks of 30 or more birds used to be common. It is now rare to find flocks of more than 12 birds.

Threats: Wild Sun Conures are extensively trapped for the pet trade. You can help protect Sun Conures and other threatened birds by making sure you only buy pets that are not taken from the wild.

At Perth Zoo: Sun Conures can be seen in the South American aviary and in the walk-through exhibit in the primate area.
